It's The Season of Giving

It is the season of GIVING! As we go out over the next month, in search of the perfect gifts for family and friends, it is also a good time to take a minute to think about what the act of GIVING actually means to us.

While we all appreciate receiving thoughtful gifts, for most of us the act of GIVING a gift is much more enjoyable.  It is when we see the reaction and feelings that we are able to create for someone by the simple gesture of GIVING them something that fills us with a sense of joy.  It can have more of a positive impact on the person GIVING the gift than the one receiving.

 As we go out over the next month, in search of the perfect gifts for family and friends, it is also a good time to take a minute to think about what the act of GIVING actually means to us.

While we all appreciate receiving thoughtful gifts, for most of us the act of GIVING a gift is much more enjoyable.  It is when we see the reaction and feelings that we are able to create for someone by the simple gesture of GIVING them something that fills us with a sense of joy.  It can have more of a positive impact on the person GIVING the gift than the one receiving.

 Personally I wish more people focused their efforts on GIVING.  We all know of the Law of Reciprocity, but very few people focus on what it can mean for them.  Far too many people take this law too literally.  They believe if they GIVE someone something that person then owes them one.  It is not about GIVING someone a gift and then getting one from them in return.  The truth is when we GIVE someone something we do get something in return immediately, and it is that feeling mentioned above.  I believe that when we focus on helping and GIVING to others first we will get more than we ever dreamed in return.  It may not come from that person, but it does come back to us in other ways.

 This Law of Reciprocity and the importance of GIVING first, is true in business and networking as well.   When most people go out networking they are focused on what they can get from that event, or group, or organization, but they hardly ever ask what they can GIVE.  It is only when we focus on GIVING first that we will receive what we desire.

So, this Holiday Season start thinking about what you can GIVE to others in your business life.  What are you going to do for other people so that you can gain the referrals you desire for the New Year?  

Here are few ways you can begin GIVING when networking that will help you reach your desired level of success:

  1. Get Involved! Don’t just join a networking organization, get involved at some level within that organization.  GIVE your time and energy to help that organization become more successful.  You can volunteer for a Leadership Team position, or join a committee, or just volunteer to help at events.
  2. Join a Service Organization!  These organizations are all about GIVING and are a great way for you to GIVE back.  They also provide you a perfect way to meet some new, dedicated people who also focus their energy on GIVING.  If you want to know the people who know the people get involved in a Service Organization.
  3. GIVE Referrals!  Stop telling people what they can do for you and begin asking what you can do for them.  Stop telling people what a good referral for you is and begin asking what a good referral is for them.  When we focus on helping someone else gain referrals, and begin asking them how we can help, we will stand out from competitors and we will gain more referrals.
