What All Networkers Can Learn From the Movie We Bought a Zoo!

I watched a fantastic movie this weekend while recovering from a terrible cold.  The movie was We Bought a Zoo.  If you have not watched this movie I highly recommend it!  It has a terrific message, and is in fact based on a true story!

Anyways, while watching this movie there was a great line that I think all professionals can learn from when it comes to networking.  That may seem odd as this story has zero to do with running a business, but still I believe we can learn valuable life lessons from the smallest of moments if we are open to it.

Anyways, while watching this movie there was a great line that I think all professionals can learn from when it comes to networking.  That may seem odd as this story has zero to do with running a business, but still I believe we can learn valuable life lessons from the smallest of moments if we are open to it.

In the movie there is a teenage boy who is talking about how he gets nervous when trying to talk to this young lady.  He talks about how he feels awkward when he either says something, or even when he doesn’t.  Now, I know from speaking with thousands of small business owners and sales professionals that many people feel the same way when networking.   Not that we feel like a teenage boy trying to talk to his crush, but that many people feel uncomfortable speaking with someone they don’t know about anything never mind themselves and their business.  It is at this moment in the movie that the line we all can learn from comes up, and it is:

“The secret to talking is listening.”

This is the perfect lesson for people who are uncomfortable networking!  The best way to have a meaningful conversation with someone, at any moment, is to get them to do the talking!  Once you have them engaged in the conversation where they are talking about themselves the whole conversation will become more comfortable and you will be able to talk about yourself as well.

If we want to standout among our competitors when networking it is important that we are remembered after the event for the conversations we had.  The best way to do that is to let the other person talk more about themselves.  We don’t want to be the person who is perceived as self-centered and only focused on talking about what they have to offer.  Too many people go out networking with a set agenda on what THEY want to say and never actually engage in meaningful discussions.  In fact they never even LISTEN to what others are saying because they are too busy thinking about what they want to say.

The secret to talking is listening!

The next time you go to a networking event put this lesson to practice.  Get other people to talk about themselves AND LISTEN to what they have to say.  Be remembered as the person they had a great conversation with and you will be able to follow up with them and start building a profitable business relationship!
